Chiang Mai Strengthens Its Role as a “Global MICE City”

Chiang Mai has long been one of Thailand’s leading MICE cities, distinguished by a combination of strengths that come together naturally within a single destination. These include Lanna culture, natural surroundings, universities and knowledge institutions, creative businesses, a new generation of entrepreneurs, technology, as well as meeting venues, hotels and experiences capable of welcoming visitors from around the world.

What differentiates Chiang Mai in the MICE market is not simply the number of meeting rooms, hotels or attractions, but the city’s distinctive identity, which connects culture, creativity, people and the new economy.

This strength is reflected in two key elements. “Creative Lanna” builds on Lanna cultural assets and local wisdom to create value within the contemporary creative economy, while the “Digital Nomad Hub” ecosystem connects Chiang Mai with developers, designers, creators, startups, technology entrepreneurs and professionals from different countries.

Creative Lanna gives Chiang Mai distinctive roots and identity, while the Digital Nomad Hub connects the city with people, knowledge, technology and international networks. Combined with MICE infrastructure, data, technology and sustainability, these elements represent important strengths in advancing Chiang Mai’s role as a Global MICE City.

2027: From MICE City Certification to Higher Standards

Chiang Mai is preparing for its MICE City assessment for fiscal year 2027 following the completion of its five-year certification term. The assessment covers eight strategic areas and 32 indicators, ranging from accessibility to the city and event venues, city support, internationally recognised accommodation and venues, safety and city reputation, to risk management and sustainable environmental practices.

The assessment goes beyond the renewal of certification. It provides a comprehensive view of the city’s MICE readiness, including accessibility, data connectivity, the quality of venues and services, risk management, sustainability, and the distribution of benefits from the MICE industry to businesses and communities in the area.

The province has established seven working groups to collect, analyse and prepare self-assessment data through a digital system, alongside long-term goals of Global Benchmarking and becoming a Global Association Hub by 2036.

Chiang Mai has also been selected to host the MICE City Summit 2027, providing another important platform to showcase the capabilities of northern Thailand’s MICE cities and connect urban development networks with the public sector, private sector and MICE industry at both national and international levels.

The 2027 assessment therefore serves as another mechanism for elevating Chiang Mai’s standards based on strengths the city already possesses, while reinforcing its position in the international MICE market.

When MarTech and Data Become Part of MICE City Infrastructure

Another element reflecting Chiang Mai’s direction is the integration of Marketing Technology, or MarTech, into the development of its MICE ecosystem.

Global MarTech Integration Day 2026, held in Chiang Mai from 3 to 5 August 2026, served as a platform connecting marketing technology, artificial intelligence, the business sector and the MICE industry through conferences, networking, business matching and MarTech solution development. Technology was positioned as a key component supporting Chiang Mai’s development as a Global MICE City.

In this context, technology is not limited to event promotion or communication. It also enables the city to gain deeper insights into markets and participants. Data allows organisers and the city to understand the behaviour, interests and needs of target audiences, while CRM systems and Customer Data Platforms connect communication between organisers, businesses and travellers. AI and marketing tools further support the design of experiences and services tailored to different participant groups.

The MarTech Solution Pitching programme also provided technology developers with a platform to present digital solutions that connect with Chiang Mai’s MICE ecosystem, with measurable outcomes covering participant experience, business efficiency and the city’s image.

MarTech and Data have therefore become part of City Intelligence, enabling Chiang Mai to use information more effectively in resource management, market planning and the development of the MICE industry.

Creative Lanna: An Identity That Sets Chiang Mai Apart

While many cities can make comparable investments in technology and infrastructure, local identity is far more difficult to replicate. For Chiang Mai, this strength lies in Lanna cultural assets and knowledge expressed through architecture, craftsmanship, design, cuisine, art, music, wellness, nature and local ways of life.

The Creative Lanna concept has been continuously developed through Chiang Mai University and local networks, combining Lanna knowledge and wisdom with innovation and creativity. Culture therefore functions not only as something to be preserved or displayed, but also as part of the contemporary economy.

This strength connects directly with the MICE industry.

Design conferences connect with designers, craftspeople and creative communities. Food-related events draw upon local ingredients and the gastronomy of northern Thailand. Wellness programmes connect traditional wisdom with nature and well-being, while incentive travel offers experiences in which participants can learn, take part in activities and interact with local communities.

Participants therefore do more than visit Chiang Mai. They experience the identity of the city through meaningful connections with people, knowledge and authentic local ways of life.

Creative Lanna is consequently more than a cultural concept. It is one of Chiang Mai’s competitive strengths in the international MICE market, creating experiences with distinctive stories, meaning and character that set the destination apart.

Digital Nomad Hub: A Talent Network Connecting Chiang Mai with the World

Chiang Mai also draws strength from its digital ecosystem, startups, entrepreneurs, creators and professionals who are able to work from anywhere.

The Northern Economic Corridor, or NEC Creative LANNA, places importance on combining local wisdom with innovation and modern technology, positioning northern Thailand as a base for creative industries, digital industries, innovation cities, startups and the Digital Nomad community.

For Chiang Mai, the Digital Nomad concept represents much more than the familiar image of international residents working from cafés or co-working spaces.

Developers, designers, marketers, technology entrepreneurs, startups, creators and professionals from different countries form part of a talent pool connected with the city’s creative and digital economy.

These networks connect with the MICE industry through hackathons, creative conferences, technology forums, startup events and knowledge exchange activities. Participants in these communities contribute as attendees, speakers, technology developers, content creators, entrepreneurs and business connectors between Thailand and international markets.

Together with universities, local entrepreneurs, creative businesses and the technology ecosystem, these networks make Chiang Mai more than a city where people from around the world choose to work. The city has become a place where people, knowledge, creativity and international networks circulate within the local economy.

This is the value of Chiang Mai as a Digital Nomad Hub, connecting living, working, technology, creativity and business opportunities within one ecosystem.

Creative Lanna and Digital Nomad Hub: Two Strengths That Reinforce Each Other

Chiang Mai’s distinctive character becomes even clearer when Creative Lanna and the Digital Nomad Hub are viewed as complementary parts of the same urban ecosystem.

Creative Lanna represents the roots of the city, creating identity, stories and value derived from the local context.

The Digital Nomad Hub represents a network connecting Chiang Mai with people, knowledge, technology and the global economy.

One gives Chiang Mai its distinctive character, while the other connects that distinctiveness with the contemporary world.

The MICE industry provides a platform where these two strengths come together through conferences, exhibitions, innovation forums, business activities, creative festivals, knowledge exchange and incentive experiences.

Technology-related events connect with entrepreneurs and digital talent in the city. Design events connect with Creative Lanna. Food and wellness events draw on northern Thailand’s wisdom and resources, while international events bring experts and global networks into contact with local entrepreneurs and younger generations.

Chiang Mai therefore competes through both its venues and infrastructure and the strength of an urban ecosystem that systematically connects culture, creativity, technology and people.

A Global MICE City That Creates Value for Local People

The value of a Global MICE City is measured not only by the number of events or visitors, but also by the outcomes generated for local businesses and communities.

The MICE industry creates demand for professional organisers, production companies, audiovisual and lighting service providers, transportation businesses, restaurants, product manufacturers, designers, craftspeople, community enterprises, technology service providers and a new generation of local professionals.

MICE City Summit 2026 also reinforced the role of the MICE industry as a mechanism for generating income and distributing opportunities from the city level to the grassroots economy. Chiang Mai also joined the “Thailand MICE City Declaration”, which promotes the integration of resources, knowledge and cooperation between the public and private sectors.

The impact of the MICE industry is therefore reflected in new markets for local businesses, new careers and skills for younger generations, greater opportunities for small businesses to participate in the event value chain, and knowledge and networks that remain within the city after an event concludes.

This represents the growth of a MICE industry in which the success of events is connected with the success of the city itself.

Chiang Mai as the Trusted Gateway to Northern Thailand

Chiang Mai’s direction is aligned with TCEB’s strategy of positioning Thailand as “Global Asia’s Trusted Gateway”, or a trusted gateway connecting the world with Asia, with the MICE industry creating High Impact for the economy and industry while delivering valuable and sustainable experiences.

TCEB places importance on Data, Intelligence and innovation, raising standards and sustainability, developing entrepreneurs, and leveraging Thailand’s competitive industries as advantages in the international MICE market.

For Chiang Mai, the meaning of Trusted Gateway therefore extends beyond serving as a gateway to northern Thailand.

Chiang Mai connects Lanna culture with the creative economy, local entrepreneurs with global markets, digital talent with business and industry, and international events with the knowledge, universities, entrepreneurs and communities of northern Thailand.

These roles allow Chiang Mai to compete through the “value of the city”, rather than solely through price, hotel capacity or event space.

From The Soul of Lanna to The Pulse of the World

Chiang Mai brings together key elements of an international MICE city within a single urban ecosystem, including cultural identity, the creative economy, educational institutions, entrepreneurs, technology, nature, digital talent networks and MICE infrastructure.

The 2027 MICE City assessment strengthens the city’s standards and management systems, while MarTech and Data enhance efficiency and deepen understanding of the market.

Creative Lanna creates differentiation through the city’s cultural roots, wisdom and creativity, while the Digital Nomad Hub connects Chiang Mai with people, knowledge, technology and global networks.

Together, these two elements clearly express the vision: “The Soul of Lanna, The Pulse of the World.”

The Soul of Lanna represents the roots that give Chiang Mai its identity, stories and distinctive value.

The Pulse of the World represents the connection of that identity with technology, business, creativity and people from around the world.

These are Chiang Mai’s strengths as it advances as a Global MICE City: a city where international events connect with industries and people, where creative professionals and global talent exchange knowledge, where local businesses connect with new markets, and where the growth of the MICE industry creates value for the economy and communities at the same time.

Chiang Mai is advancing towards becoming a world-class city for meetings and events, attracting business travellers, event organisers and participants from around the world while creating sustainable economic opportunities for the people of Chiang Mai.
