Korat Expo 2029: Transforming Korat into a Smart MICE Green City and a Global MICE Platform

Korat Expo 2029, or the Nakhon Ratchasima International Horticultural Expo 2029, should not be viewed merely as a large-scale horticultural exhibition. Rather, it should be viewed as an urban development project that connects the MICE industry, agriculture, food, technology, sustainability, and the regional economy.

For Thailand, this project means more than hosting an international event. It is an opportunity to showcase the country’s potential as a MICE destination capable of designing and driving world-class events in line with international standards.

At the same time, it serves as an important platform to elevate Nakhon Ratchasima, or Korat, into a Smart MICE Green City with a role in connecting the economy, technology, agriculture, and sustainability at the regional level.

Korat Expo 2029 is an A1 International Horticultural Expo scheduled to be held in Nakhon Ratchasima Province from 10 November 2029 to 28 February 2030, spanning approximately 110 days. The event will be held under the main theme “Nature and Greenery: Envisioning the Green Future,” which reflects a vision of a green future through nature, plants, and sustainability.

The International Association of Horticultural Producers, or AIPH, approved Nakhon Ratchasima’s application to host Korat Expo 2029 as an A1 International Horticultural Expo. This makes the project another important milestone for Thailand on the international exhibition stage.

Korat Expo 2029 is also part of Thailand’s broader roadmap for driving world-class events. It reflects the country’s systematic and continuous development of an international exhibition pipeline.

The strength of Korat Expo 2029 lies in its ability to connect the MICE industry with the urban development agenda in a tangible way. This project is not simply about bringing large numbers of visitors to the area. It is about using a world-class event as a tool to accelerate infrastructure development, strengthen the city’s image, attract investment, and stimulate the local economy in the long term.

Driving a world-class event requires collaboration across multiple sectors, including the central government, provincial authorities, agricultural agencies, MICE entrepreneurs, educational institutions, the private sector, and local communities.

Nakhon Ratchasima is one of Thailand’s 10 MICE Cities and a major city in the Northeastern region, with an important role in the economy, agriculture, industry, and tourism.

Korat’s advantage lies not only in its area or population size, but also in its role as an economic gateway to the Northeast. The city has a strong agricultural and industrial base, natural and historical tourism attractions, and cultural resources that can be further developed into experiences for MICE participants.

With Korat Expo 2029 built upon a city with such potential, the project can serve both as a world-class event and as a tool to accelerate urban development.

According to information from Nakhon Ratchasima Province, the event site is located at the Khok Nong Rangka public area in Thephalai Subdistrict, Khong District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. The total area covers approximately 678 rai, divided into around 523 rai for the exhibition area and around 155 rai for parking.

This scale means that Korat Expo 2029 is not merely an indoor exhibition. It is a large open area that can be designed as a green city experience, a horticultural learning centre, an agricultural innovation space, a cultural area, and a creative economy zone at the same time.

In terms of experience design, the project has the potential to connect visitors with multiple dimensions of Korat, from nature, agriculture, food, communities, and culture to technology and sustainability.

Korat Expo 2029 is expected to generate a significant economic impact. Estimates indicate that the project is expected to attract approximately 2.6–4 million visitors, generate more than THB 18.942 billion in economic circulation, increase gross domestic product by approximately THB 9.163 billion, generate tax revenue of around THB 3.429 billion, and create approximately 36,000 jobs.

These figures reflect that Korat Expo 2029 is viewed as an important milestone for promoting sustainable regional economic development. It also serves as a mechanism for distributing income to local entrepreneurs, from the agricultural sector and service sector to hotels and local creative businesses.

The core value of Korat Expo 2029 does not lie only in visitor numbers or the economic value generated during the 110-day event period. The more important question is: what will Korat gain in the long term after the event ends?

The concept of legacy is therefore highly important for this project. A successful world-class event should not be remembered merely as one major event. It should leave long-term outcomes for the city, such as new public spaces, agricultural and environmental learning centres, improved infrastructure, stronger entrepreneurial networks, quality MICE personnel, and a clearer city image on the global stage.

The term Smart MICE Green City is a highly suitable framework for communicating Korat Expo 2029 because it connects three important dimensions.

Smart refers to the use of data, technology, and systematic urban management to accommodate large numbers of visitors and manage resources efficiently.

MICE refers to using this project as a platform to elevate Korat as a MICE City capable of hosting international conferences, exhibitions, events, and activities.

Green refers to designing the event and its post-event outcomes in connection with sustainability, green spaces, clean energy, resource management, and the green economy.

If these three elements are driven together, Korat Expo 2029 will not be merely an international horticultural expo. It will become a model project for green MICE city development in Thailand.

TCEB’s role in Korat Expo 2029 should be explained beyond the word support. TCEB serves as a driver of the bidding process and international presentation strategy, working together with the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, and Team Thailand.

From the perspective of the MICE industry, this role is highly significant.
